Entertainment TV, V-day, diamonds, usual crap

Jennifer Kesler

Someone had the TV at my gym tonight set to E! or Entertainment Tonight or something. Howard Stern has given some woman a 5.2 carat ring. Man, they could not emphasize that number enough. They said it repeatedly, then printed it all over the screen in case you missed that.

Valentine’s Day is about romantic love. Romantic love is where some man gives some woman a big huge diamond, and she displays it to all her friends … READ MORE

Britney’s divorce breaking news on CNN?

Jennifer Kesler

I keep hearing from people who say that on Election Day here in the US, CNN actually broke into regular programming to announce Britney Spears is getting divorced. I didn’t see it myself, but I have heard it from several people who are not on drugs, and the websites for all major news sources certainly promoted it as “breaking news”.

On Election Day? “Britney Spears changes her coital habits! And, oh yeah, that Rumsfeld guy steps down and the Democrats … READ MORE

Early Motherhood

In lieu of my Boston Legal post (my dad wanted to tape something, and by the time I get around to watching the tape, it will be Tuesday, adn I can’t be bothered remembering until Thursday…) I’m going to post something I found interesting. The full article is here. I’ve edited as I saw fit (and possibly took the article out of context).

From AAP:

People are more likely to see their 100th birthday if they were born to young mothers, research … READ MORE

Gimme That Old Time Religion

sbg

I work for an Episcopal diocese’s main office, something that as a firmly agnostic person I find very ironic. Honestly, it’s mostly like any other job I’ve had except I have to sit through opening prayers at meetings.

I’m not one for organized religion of any kind, but I have to say Episcopalians are trying to get into the 21st Century…at least on all visible levels. At this weekend’s General Convention (gigantic governing body where all decisions are made),    Episcopals … READ MORE

Did the Washington Post Lie?

Jennifer Kesler

You may or may not be familiar with the original story the Washington Post ran, stating that the federal government had come out with a new guideline advising women to think of themselves as pre-pregnant at all times: that means, live their entire menstrual lives as if they were pregnant, just in case, so any unplanned fetus will be healthy. This would mean no drinking, very few medications of any sort, no being around cat feces, and for heaven’s … READ MORE

Tabloid Fodder

Last week in a tutorial we were discussing the role of the tabloid media, and how ultimately, if the public are so willing to pay to read about the private lives of celebrities, then who are the public to condemn the tabloid press for invading the private lives of celebrities? The gist of the argument went that before society blames the media for Princess Diana’s death, society should take a long, hard look at itself for encouraging the media to, … READ MORE

Long Island Lolita

A couple of years ago, I saw the movie Long Island Lolita: The Amy Fisher Story, starring Drew Barrymore. The treatment meted out to Fisher for largely being the victim of sexual predators all her life enraged me so much that I couldn’t forget it. I’ve done some research to see how well the events of the movie correspond with real life, and sad to say, they more or less do.

To recap: Fisher was sexually abused from early childhood by … READ MORE

Like a Virgin PtII

This month’s Australian edition of Marie Claire has Jessica Simpson on the cover, and features a couple of gems on her decision to remain a virgin for her husband. This one I particularly loved:

For me personally, virginity is something I want to save for marriage. I think that’s the best wedding gift anyone could give.

I’m willing to accept that those are Christian values which deserve my respect even if I don’t agree with them, but I assume Nick Lachey wasn’t … READ MORE

Like a Virgin…

I can believe I’m sympathising with Britney Spears, and I’ll try not to make a habit of it, but here goes:

I am appalled by the way the media treated her when she went back on her word to remain a virgin until she married. Here with have someone who, in her early-mid teens, proclaimed her Christian values and that she would remain a virgin until her wedding night; in her late teens or early twenties she changed her mind. Because, … READ MORE
