I just heard Marina and the Diamonds’ “Obsession.” I’m not sure it’s all that transgressive… it’s like OMG a woeful looking white woman is SAD!!! Anyways, she’s getting some critical acclaim anyways, even though it looks like she’s got some Katy Perry I’M THE GIRL THAT’S LIKE A GUY bs going on.
From SunlessNick: Shakesspeare’s Sister talks about the awesomeness that is Britney Spears’ Candie photoshoot .
Honestly, I’m surprised that folks are surprised that B.Spears is a bit of a firecracker and is conscious of the way the industry exploits her. Have you HEARD the lyrics to “Piece of Me?”
I’m Miss bad media karma
Another day another drama
Guess I can’t see the harm
In working and being a mama
And with a kid on my arm
I’m still an exceptional earner
you want a piece of me?
I’m Mrs. ‘Lifestyles of the rich and famous’
(You want a piece of me)
I’m Mrs. ‘Oh my God that Britney’s Shameless’
(You want a piece of me)
I’m Mrs. ‘Extra! Extra! This just in’
(You want a piece of me)
I’m Mrs. ‘She’s too big now she’s too thin’
(You want a piece of me)
Little Boots inspired one blogger to reflect on the feminist potential of the Tenori-Oh.

Thanks for the link to Shakesspeare’s Sister on Britney – interesting perspective – though I would note she still is making wealth through all that, something most divorcees, single moms, and women struggling with body issues etc are not. As she says herself in the song, she’s still an ‘exceptional earner.’ Still, fair enough that she should somehow be okay to mock…
Did love at the end of the video, I am pretty sure she’s saying “go to hell”.

You know, I’ve had high hopes for Britney Spears for some time because she was in entertainment long before she could possibly understand what that meant, surrounded and pressured by other people’s expectations. Add to this a religious background that totally contradicted her entertainment life but didn’t bring her nearly as much social approval and wealth, and no wonder she’s had some issues.
I’d really like to see her figure out who she is and what HER goals are, and this looks like a step in that direction.

I’m hoping so.

I really like Marina, for me she could be a Regina Spektor for our side of the pond based on the songs I’ve heard. But yeah, after reading that article, she’s got it a bit skewed when it comes to her identity, someone needs to educate her about female identity and feminism!
Still love her song ‘I am not a robot’. I Think her lyrics are nicely put together.

Ever since Britney’s repertoire switched from “I’m a Slave 4 U” to “Piece of Me,” I’ve been wondering who’s in charge of her lyrical content. Does she say, “Hey, someone write me a song about how I’m sick of the paparazzi?” or do her producers/executives/whatever decide they want her persona to get vengeful? If she’s tired of being sexualized, is it her decision to still be sexualized in her music/videos/photoshoots or does she feel she can’t do anything else if she wants to remain “an exceptional earner”?

According to Wiki (I know, I know) Britney wrote the songs herself for Circus.

I don’t know about the image/sexualization stuff… I mean, to me she’s less salacious now then when she was pretending to be a slutty schoolgirl, but I don’t know if that’s the intent or what.
