All Saints: Use Condoms

February 22, 2008

There was a lot to gripe about season 10 of All Saints. But my number-one gripe was the storyline with Erica (Ricki), Dan and his Hep C.

Dan and Ricki have been best friends for a few years. He contracts Hepatitis C from a needlestick injury, which makes Ricki realize how much she cares about him, and they get together. Yeah, I know it’s a cliché, but either Jolene Anderson and Mark Priestly delivered it well, or I’ve been watching All ...Read More

All Saints: The Hard Yards

February 5, 2008

In the season one episode of All Saints, The Hard Yards, nurse Jarad’s football hero Gazza is admitted, having been stabbed by his girlfriend. Gazza is claiming an unprovoked attack by a jealous, insecure girlfriend; the girlfriend is claiming rape. Devoted fan that he is, Jarad wants to believe Gazza. But in a drug-induced haze, Gazza admits to it, still maintaining that she wanted it. See, to his logic, when he comes home pumped after a hard day’s training and ...Read More

You’ll Never Walk Aone…

December 25, 2007

There was an episode at the end of s2 of Desperate Housewives, where Susan’s house is burned down by her rival Edie, who has some choice home truths to tell her about her dependence on men to bail her out. So much so, that Susan decides she’s going to decline her boyfriend John’s offer to move in – instead, she buys a caravan for her and her daughter to live in. It’s small, but it’s won by her own sweat ...Read More

All Saints: the Beginning

December 4, 2007

Last year, I griped a lot about just how bad All Saints had gotten in its portrayal of women and women’s issues compared to how it used to be. For Christmas, I got the first and second seasons on DVD. I’m remembering exactly why I loved this show, and why I keep watching it as it gets progressively worse.

For starters, your lead character Terri (Georgie Parker) is a nun. But they rarely play on this. Instead, she’s a highly professional ...Read More

Another Crappy Love Triangle

November 20, 2007

The main reason I stopped watching daytime soap opera The Bold and the Beautiful was a love triangle involving Ridge, his wife Brooke and his late-wife-who-wasn’t-actually-dead Taylor. Taylor died, Ridge started seeing Brooke and married her, Taylor reappeared. Who is Ridge married to? Who does he want to be with? We’ll overlook the stupidity of the storyline (and the fact they’ve used it at least once before, probably just reworded the old scripts) and focus on the actions of the ...Read More

How To Have a Woman Sleeping With Her Boss Without Demeaning Her: Christina and Preston from Grey’s Anatomy

August 7, 2007

Note: I wrote this mid-s2. I haven’t seen much of s3, but I understand the dynamic changed somewhat in s3.

The biggest thing I love about Grey’s Anatomy is the relationship between Christina Yang and Preston Burke. He’s her boss, but they’re equals in the relationship, something as refreshing as it is rare. So, in no particular order, here’s Scarlett’s guide on How To Have a Woman Sleeping With Her Boss Without Demeaning Her.

Have her swear him to secrecy over their ...Read More
