Fifteen Blogs That Make Us Think

Way back in April, we here at THL were honored with the Thinking Blogger Award by C.L. Hanson of Letters From A Broad. The guidelines for the award, for those of you unfamiliar with it, are as follows:

1. If, and only if, you get tagged, write a post with links to 5 blogs that make you think,

2. Link to this post so that people can easily find the exact origin of the meme,

3. Optional: Proudly display the ‘Thinking Blogger Award’ with a link to the post that you wrote.

We were touched by C.L. Hanson’s recognition, and immediately started discussing who we would pass the award on to, ourselves. But then, because we are busy bloggers – and because there are several of us in here to do the discussing, and nothing done by committee is ever done efficiently – we never did get around to paring our list down to just five and posting it.

And now here it is, July already, and we’ve had a bit of a kick in the pants over the issue: We’ve been given the award again. Twice, actually. First (or is that second?) from The Duck Thief at Great White North, and then once more from Never That Easy.

Clearly, we need to make some kind of response to this! And since we’re unable to name merely five blogs that make us think, we’ve decided that three awards x passing the award on to five blogs each time = us honoring not five, but fifteen blogs. It’s probably cheating, but at least it’s of the sort where (we hope!) everyone wins. So here are fifteen blogs we love because they really make us think (and for other reasons, too):

50 Books, where Doppleganger keeps one hell of a book blog.

abyss2hope, home of Marcella Chester’s thorough coverage of all sorts of issues relating to rape and sexual assault.

The Angry Black Woman is funny, wonderfully geeky, and always thought-provoking (in addition, of course, to being angry).

Arrogant Self-Reliance is the home of Amy Reads, who is one Delightfully Perceptive Reader, as well as being Quite an Eloquent Writer.

Crimitism, where Richie (one of our favorite gender traitors) examines stuff that’s frequently deeply depressing, and always manages to make it hilarious.

Crucial Minutiae is about the little things, which often spark some big thoughts.

Feminist Gamers provides truly excellent feminist analysis of videogames and coverage of related news. Also, Trailer Tuesdays.

Feminist SF – The Blog! is a thought-provoking group blog with focus on topics very close to our geeky hearts here at THL.

Girls Read Comics (And They’re Pissed), where Karen Healey reads comics, gets pissed, and then writes brilliantly about it.

Heroine Content: Helping Feminists With Their Netflix Queues Since 2006 – and provoking deep thinking with every post along the way.

Inside Out is a fantastic and fascinating comics blog by industry insider Rachel Edidin.

Marketing to Women Online, where Holly analyzes why various ad campaigns do and don’t work on women.

Official Shrub.com Blog is home to several bloggers (led by Andrea Rubenstein) covering a wide variety of eclectic topics from a feminist perspective, sometimes with humor, sometimes with rage, and always with passion.

One Good Thing [now private] is Leigh Anne Wilson’s dauntless chronology of the everyday life of the majority of America, with a sense of humor that seems never to abandon her.

The True Confessions of an Hourly Bookseller is home to Mickle, writing intelligently on books of all sorts, sexual assault, and anything else that moves her to speak.

Congratulations go out to all of those we’ve honored – and we’ll be delighted to see who you pass the award on to, in your turn(s). Even with fifteen awards to hand out, we had to leave out many of our favorites, but we’re sure that such excellent blogs will all be honored eventually by others – providing that people don’t sit on the award indefinitely, as we almost did!

Congratulations, and thank you so much! What a lovely treat to be honored by you. And what a great idea for an award. Can’t wait to put this to my fellow Crucial Minutists and see who they want to honor in turn.

Wow – I just found out about this. How wonderful. Seriously – you don’t know how perfect your timing is.

I was just tossing out to the universe that I need a sign that I’m going in the right direction.

I’m sure many of you hit those moments where everything is going wrong, and you start to doubt yourself.

At just such a moment I found this. And in the wonderful spirit of the award, I will certainly pass it along as well.

We all need cheerleaders, now more than ever. Thank you for wagging your figurative pom poms.

    you R-O-C-K!
