Readers: what do you want from Hathor?

Jennifer Kesler

I love the internet. Unlike TV or movies or publishing, you can get audience feedback almost instantly instead of trying to decipher ratings or polls.

Every so often, I like to ask you, dear readers, what you want from Hathor. More reviews? If so, which sort (more movie reviews, more TV shows, more sci-fi, more drama, more international, etc.)? More video game reviews? More topical posts on gender, or on themes and tropes common to a lot of movies and TV shows, or on a specific topic you’ve wished we would tackle? Interviews with directors or screenwriters or someone else? Something else I haven’t even thought of?

Let us know in the comments. We can’t promise we’ll be able to give you everything you want, but the more we know about why you read us, the better our chances of improving the site from your perspective.

More game reviews would be lovely, especially since the Feminist Gamers blog is on hiatus.

In general, though, keep doing what you’re doing; I always enjoy what I read here.

What I’ve enjoyed most has been the analysis of movies and pop culture. Your site captured the subtext of Fight Club brilliantly. I feel like I don’t need to argue with people about the movie anymore; I can just direct them here and they would have to finally get it.

So more things like that. I like it.

I, too, enjoy the pop culture and film analysis rather a lot. So things of which I would like more: film analysis, discussion starters about TV tropes, and coverage of international films when appropriate (like when said film is out on DVD and we can rush right out to get it after reading said coverage). :-)

I come here for the feminist examination of films, tv, and books. Whatever proportion of these things you have, I will keep reading.

I really like the reviews and topical posts - especially the reviews which link in with topics and spark off chains of new ideas and connections. And the thematic reviews, which I guess are the “theme and trope” topical posts. So I guess I agree with Theora and Eileen - analysis is great (especially when it takes things apart and puts them back together in interesting ways).

More TV shows (or single episodes) reviews.

I’ve really been enjoying the posts about commercials, probably because I can watch the embedded video first (I haven’t watched all the shows and video games that get reviewed).

Other then that, I second/third/fourth what those above have said.

I really enjoy the book reviews. My awesome library system has most of the books you’ve reviewed, and I’m ordering and reading my way through them.

I like the ad reviews too. Like Ariadne, I can watch the content then read the analysis on it. I’m just not a big movie watcher (which probably makes me not this site’s target audience, but oh well!)

I would like to see more on animation, possibly anime, and perhaps some analysis of classics. Also, I’d like it if the reviewers were sure to watch all of a series if they were going to review the series as a whole, and if not, to stick to those episodes they have seen. Finally, I would like to see more positive comments rather than negative, and less about commercials. Commercials are awful, and always will be. They really aren’t worth the analysis.

I think this is a good place to just say that I love the book reviews. I don’t comment much on them, but I look forward to them and have a “covet” list of books I’m going to one day have the time to read based on Hathor reviews.

I’d love to see some gendered-analysis of the way various types of disability are portrayed on t.v. and in the movies, but I have no idea how realistic that is, with me not watching t.v. and all.

More! Just more! Of any/everything.

More about how media institutions work. Analysis on commercials works for me, particularly since they’re some of the most ubiquitous and pernicious reinforcements of gendered thought around. (Although it would be nice to maybe round up commercials with similar themes and analyzing them as a group, rather than having many short posts.) Reviews are always always good.

And, y’know, just more. Of everything.

Hey Inayr, I agree that commercials are awful and always will be. But the extent and nature of the awfulness definitely changes over time, and it’s an interesting way to keep up with one aspect of media portrayal of women. (Or non-whites, or disabled people, or whatever.) That’s why I think the articles on commercials are so neat. :)

As a history buff I’m interested in looking at the portrayal of women in documentaries - I’m specifically thinking of two I saw recently-ish, Yoko Ono in The US vs John Lennon and Natalie Maines in Shut Up and Sing (both, IMHO, terrific presentations of deeply flawed but fundamentally decent RL women). Realise that’s quite a niche catagory.

And, um, maybe I should actually get off my ass and go and write up some of the stuff I’m interested in reading about. At least it will get my boyfirend off my back for writing nothing more then fanfiction :p

I would like to see some more writing on computer games and I’m always happy for more on Sci Fi movies.
