The trainwreck that was Robin Hood Series Two

Jennifer Kesler

This review will contain spoilers through the end of Robin Hood Series Two.

Let me state for the record: the artistic problems with Robin Hood are too numerous and hilarious for a mere sidenote in a review that focuses on how the series treated its female characters. It’s a show that doesn’t take itself seriously except when it takes itself seriously, and doesn’t mean to send any messages except when it means to send messages. It’s not just bad; it’s a … READ MORE

Female characters exist to promote male leads for network profits

Jennifer Kesler

This article began as a quick note on something we discussed about Robin Hood a while ago, but turned into an in-depth explanation for why the Mo Movie Measure test is so rarely passed by TV and film. It contains Robin Hood spoilers through S2’s “Get Carter.”

Dominic Minghella said it again. Oy.

In an “extra” during the commercial break for last week’s (US) episode of Robin Hood on BBCA, he said “Of course Marian is stirred by Guy; who wouldn’t be?” … READ MORE

Being touched by filth

Jennifer Kesler

One of the things I liked about Alias was how, after Sydney found out what a monster Sloane was but decided she’d stay on as a double agent in order to take him down, she had to play nice and pretend she didn’t want to go hose herself off every time he placed a fatherly hand on her shoulder. Gisborne: Stalker or Sexy Bad Boy?

Jennifer Kesler

ETA: SERIES TWO SPOILERS IN COMMENTS. This review covers Series 1 only. Series 2 has not yet aired in the US at the time of this writing.

I’ve been meaning to write about the dynamic between Marian and Guy of Gisborne on BBC’s Robin Hood series for a while now. Watching an episode commentary in which one of the producers debates it with Lucy Griffiths (Marian) prompted me to do so tonight.

SBG described the events between Marian and Gisborne a … READ MORE

BBC’s Robin Hood: Djaq

sbg

Last week, I spoke briefly about Robin Hood’s Marian. This week, I’ll touch just as briefly on the other female character in the ensemble: Djaq (sounds like Jack).

When we first meet Djaq, we are to believe she’s a boy. She’s being held prisoner by the Sheriff along with other Saracen men, and they’re all being transported to work as slave labor in the mines. Enter Robin and his crew. Stuff happens, the Sarecens are let go. IIRC, this is about … READ MORE

BBC’s Robin Hood: Marian

sbg

For those who plan to watch the show, please note there are spoilers for series one in the post and comments that follow…

I’m a bit late in the game on this one, but to be fair Robin Hood aired in the States quite a bit later than it originally played in the UK. I intended to watch it from the beginning, but BBCAmerica’s so far away from the channels I usually flip through that I tend to forget it’s there. … READ MORE
