The Frog Princess (F-word coverage)

by Jennifer Kesler on March 26, 2007

The F Word has some coverage of coverage of The Frog Princess, which will be Disney’s first ever feature starring a black princess.   While “yet another princess” isn’t really a step forward for women in general, this film may finally acknowledge that little black girls can be just as pretty, glamorous and worthy of societal elevation as little white girls.

Having a Disney Princess with an afro puff means great things for moms who have had to explain to their little curly haired angels that their hair is just as pretty as Becky’s or Emily’s.

Hey, in the form of Kim Possible, Disney has begun to acknowledge that little red-headed girls can be heroic and adventurous.   Maybe in another hundred years, we’ll get them to acknowledge that girls of any color can be many things, including but not limited to princesses.
