Virginity and the Male Superhero

I’ve been watching season three of Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman.  The last episode I watched Clark came clean to his new fiancée, Lois, that he’s been saving himself for the right woman.  Which, as it so happens, is Lois.

Lois freaks.   She certainly didn’t save herself for him.

Why is this worth mentioning?   Two things.   First, the fact that the male lead in a television show is the one showing signs of innocence instead of the female lead is a very rare concept in television.   Even more rare, which is my second reason for going into this, is that this particular male lead is also a superhero.  One that is looked up to.   One that, should we say, could have his pick of the ladies?  As far as I’ve noted, male superheroes are rarely shown in this regard.   Naïve and innocent?   Why, aren’t those feminine words?

Not as far as this show is concerned.  And for that, I am grateful.
