20 on the 20th — Pat Cadigan

Pat Cadigan: A Brilliant Cyberpunk Author

Pat Cadigan is a brilliant author and has received several awards for her work. Her work is mostly classified as a part of the Cyberpunk movement. Cyberpunk is a branch of Sci-Fi that focuses on technological advancement and is usually set in the future. Cadigan’s writing typically explores how human beings relate to technology. One of her latest novels, Parasite, is a horror fiction novel that features body-possessing parasites and a rebellious teenage girl. Cadigan’s technothrillers often include a dark sense of humor. Many things in her life have impacted her award-winning content and short stories. She has been open about how these impact her plots, characters, and writing style.

Writing Influences

Pat has traveled to and lived in many places in the United States and England. These places have been influential in her writing. She has expressed the epiphany she experienced after moving out of the United States for the first time. It was living in London that opened her eyes to how “US-centric” her worldview was. This awareness has helped her to grow and develop her writing. Pat also details how studying and understanding human nature will help yield successful novels and short stories. Narratives have a more significant impact on the reader when the plot focuses more on people and human nature.

Plots that focus more on principles or situations are usually less engaging. She believes that all aspects of human nature must be embraced and understood to produce useful, well-rounded publications. Pat says that authors must explore the good, the bad, and all the grey areas in between to give a good representation of human nature that will engage readers.

Understanding that not all villains believe or know their actions are wrong is excellent for character development. Exploring this as an integral part of human nature helps to create better stories. Pat knows that no one is inherently good or bad. She believes that this has impacted her perspectives, which subsequently affects her writing style. Cadigan expressed that she does not go for happy endings. However, she tries to end her literature on a good note by demonstrating more positive or sympathetic human nature characteristics.

Why Cyberpunk?

Cyberpunk fiction is a male-dominated genre. Pat is one of the few female authors in this category. While more women authors have emerged, they are still few in numbers. Pat was the only woman cyberpunk writer when she started. Women were not necessarily being ostracized from the genre. They were just writing other things. The lack of women in cyberpunk was cause for concern for many; Pat included. She even searched for women authors whose content could be classified as cyberpunk. This effort proved to be futile. There is no simple explanation as to why there is a lack of female cyberpunk authors. Pat has expressed that the author’s sex does not affect how she reads their work. She judges each book based on its merit.

The lack of female authors of cyberpunk fiction has led to Pat being asked on many occasions why she chose this genre. Pat stated that most cyberpunk authors, herself included, were in the same age group. They were all listening to the same music and reading the same literature. So, despite their differing backgrounds, they had similar influences. However, Pat started writing on her own as she did not personally know these other cyberpunk authors. She was soon contacted by Michael Bruce Sterling, credited as a pioneer of the cyberpunk genre. Pat’s story “Rock On” was later included in his Mirrorshades literary collection. She states that this story has the most excellent earning power out of all she has written.

Despite being one of the few women writers in her genre, Pat Cadigan does not like to be classified as a woman writer. She believes identifying a woman as a “woman writer” is just a way to marginalize her. A man is often called a “good writer,” while a woman’s achievements or expertise is minimalized by calling her a “good female author.” Pat states that she does not write to be classified by her sex or gender. She writes to be best, regardless of gender.

The Role of Music

Pat has mentioned how music plays a vital role in her writing process. She always listens to music when she writes. This helps her to stay focused and prevent her from becoming weary. She states that music is a big part of who she is. Pat mentioned that she opts for music that stimulates the mood for what she is writing when writing. She has expressed that she is not particular about what kind of music she listens to while writing. She goes for anything that helps her to get the job done. Her work’s soundtracks are never published as she is aware that music impacts each person differently; it may mean one thing to her and something different to the reader. Music is more a tool to help her write than it is apart of her stories.

How Reading Influences Writing

There are many writers that Pat has named as being influential to her. She has stated that reading their written materials is better than any drug. These writers, such as Daniel Dennet and Brenda Laurel, just to name a few, have helped to open her mind and shape her writing. She also credits Isaac Asimov for her scientific knowledge at an early age. Asimov wrote nonfiction books that helped her learn science, which greatly benefited her writing.

Pat is a lover of mystery literature. She applauds mystery writers for their intelligence. She believes a writer must be intelligent to write a mystery that works. Her love for mystery literature has inspired some of her writings. Pat has combined cyberpunk with mystery in some of her books. This combination is known as “cross-pollination.” She has skillfully combined these two genres in her book, Fools, and a few others.

Robert Heinlein, Isaac Asimov, and Ray Douglas Bradbury are some of the earliest science fiction authors that Cadigan encourages novice writers to familiarize themselves with. She believes getting familiar with their work will help new authors be more creative instead of rewriting the same old ideas. Cadigan also encourages potential cyberpunk authors to read published content like Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? and authors such as Connie Willis. Reading previous work from the genre helps to expand the mind and generate new ideas.

Why does Cadigan write?

Pat is primarily concerned with how people are impacted by technology. However, these people are not far-fetched characters that are not relatable. She focuses her stories on everyday people who readers can relate to. Her characters are based on average persons, the problems they face, and their relationships with technology.

Pat writes books and stories that readers can completely indulge in. She believes a good book should not have the reader focusing on the setting, characterization, plot, etc. Pat writes so that her work is enjoyed as a whole, and the reader can escape into the novel. She believes that a good book engages all five senses. Words should form pictures in the mind as the reader plunges into the story. The writing style can be later analyzed, but at first read, a book should have a reader so invested that they do not want to be interrupted.

Why film schools teach screenwriters not to pass the Bechdel test

Have you ever asked yourself why the film industry mostly caters only to men? Ever thought about stopping or changing it? Well, for a long time, women have had a difficult time surviving in the male-dominated film industry. Initially, even in movies that they watched themselves, women’s sidelining did not look like something big. However, women who have been in the film industry, especially those who have interacted with other players better, have understood that this is nothing to smile about; it is glaring female stereotyping. Alison Bechdel took it to herself to point out the industry’s rot by calling out the gender issues that were now blatantly displayed at mainkw. She came up with a test to gauge women’s active presence in Hollywood movies, mainkw and how good their roles were.

Bechdel credited Liz Wallace, her friend, for being the brain behind the test. However, we know that it grew out of Bechdel’s 1985 comic stipe ‘Dykes to Watch out For.’ It was a straightforward test that she wanted to use in shaping the future of the Hollywood industry.

Let’s take a closer look at the industry’s challenges and how effective this test has become.

Understanding the gender issue in the film industry

As mentioned earlier, gender discrimination in the film industry has been on focus for many years. Issues about the under representation of women and who they are have spurred many discussions. But why is women’s involvement in this industry such a big issue? In her article about why student screenwriters get taught not to write scripts that pass the Bechdel test, Jennifer Kesler explains her life as a screenwriting student. Her experiences in Film schools demonstrate why having women characters in most films has not been easy. She tells her story from an inside perspective, as she had interacted with renowned industry professionals.

In her story, she explains how her professors lauded her for her writing skills. She was a great writer who always gave her best when called out to write on different scenes. However, Jennifer’s writing was just one little problem – using multiple women’s names in her scripts. Although she didn’t see anything wrong with her scripts, her characters’ choice was unanticipated by her professors. It seemed like a rule of thumb to avoid using women characters actively in film scripts. Stunned about this, Jennifer started questioning why the idea of women playing roles in her writings was unwelcome.

portrait, adult, woman

So, why not use women characters in film scripts?

According to Jennifer, finding a straight answer to this was a problem as no one was willing to explain it. Later she would meet a professor who explained it all to her. He said that the audience could not watch a movie with women characters talking between themselves. Avoiding women characters in movie scripts is one of the rules of the industry. A further explanation for this was that it was one way to ensure the industry would remain profitable. The film industry players understood that their audience did not take any scene with female characters seriously.

During such scenes, the majority male audience finds something else to do. According to them, two women conversing in a film can only talk about nail polish, shoes, etc. That would mean removing such scenes altogether would make the movie more interesting. The best way to ensure that was by dismissing female characters in scriptwriting and replacing them with male ones. If two women get included in a script by any chance, they have to be talking about a man. Feeling irritated, Jennifer walked out of the film school and vowed never to be part of the industry again.

However, she called out gender discrimination loudly as she opted to fight the system from without. According to her, Hollywood was perpetuating their desires by dismissing women scenes in movies using the ‘target audience’ as a defence.

Check out how this test works.

This test is relatively straightforward than anyone would ever think. It aims to check how active and present women characters are in different movies using a checklist with three main requirements. So, how does a film pass the test and get considered gender-sensitive? First, a film has to have women characters in active speaking roles to pass the Bechdel test’s first step. Secondly, they must have names well brought out in different scenes. Lastly, they must be speaking about something else other than a man in their conversations.

Any film that ticks all the three things pointed out by Bechdel would have passed the female involvement test. Surprisingly, few movies can pass this test as women’s involvement in the film industry is just starting to pick up. The missing female characters in scripts and movies are not coincidental, as we can learn from Jennifer’s experience. It is not that there aren’t enough women to feature behind the cameras. It is what the industry players intended to do to remain profitable.

Bechdel, in this YouTube video, explains what the main objective of the test has been. According to her, the test aims at articulating something missing in popular culture. It is not all about feminism or pointing out the number of women behind the cameras.

She says that it is about the depth of the stories that women tell on screen. Having women express their concerns and talk about themselves without mentioning men gives them the power to excel in the film industry. This test inspired the development of more tests based on ethnicity, sexual orientation, and much more.

Ending gender discrimination in the film industry

There are various ways that the gender issue in the film industry can get solved. Using the Bechdel test helps to identify movies that do not give men and women equal chances. It helps to point out the rot in the industry and starts a conversation on ending it. It is also necessary to understand the origin of this test, and as mentioned earlier, the idea came from ‘The Essential Dykes to Watch Out For’ by Alison Bechdel. With a good background understanding, you can know what this test’s objective is as Alison insists that films failing the test are not bad.

Conclusion:

The film industry has long experienced gender issues, as already pointed out earlier. Scriptwriters have learned to avoid including women characters in scenes, especially when their conversation is not about a male character. The test has been helping to identify such films and point out the weakness in gender representation. Alison Bechdel’s comic script inspired the development of this test to help change the industry’s situation. You can check it out on Amazon to understand how the book inspired the test.

Feel free to leave a question on why film schools teach screenwriters not to pass the test. As mentioned earlier, film producers did not want to lose their male audience by including scenes of women talking about themselves. Although they felt entitled to their stand on this, most people will disagree with them.

We can now see more films, including women, in their scenes compared to the 1980s. That means there are visible changes, and women are starting to feel more appreciated.

Why discriminate if it doesn't profit

Does feminine success irk movie production big shots? Do they feel emasculated? The thought of successful movies starring female leads does not receive much applause. The women’s movies bring in huge returns on investment. Therefore, bias does not add up. So, why does it happen?

Feminine success

Various factors contribute to the discrimination of successful female actors. Mostly, it is about the character flaws of these film experts. Here are a few factors that cause female bigotry in the entertainment industry.

Exaggerated Self-Importance

Professionals male actors feel important and carry themselves with an air of entitlement. They want every success attributed to them. Their interests drive them. In their way, the male actors think that failing to acknowledge that women who are as good as them, or better, will upscale their accomplishment.

Criticizing female gender effort

It is the same way that prejudiced entrepreneurs turn away good customers. Maybe due to their skin color. Or origin. Some people lose business because they are too proud and blinded by their power and achievements.

Failure To Admit a Knowledge Gap

Unfortunately, some of these experts have knowledge gaps, especially in business operation and management. They have the right skillsets and understand their profession quite well. If they fail to acknowledge something good, they are hindered by their traits. If some are doing something better than them, they should acknowledge and learn from them.

Instead, they let a business opportunity pass by. Learning and developing skills will enable them to be the best they want. It takes a lot of work to learn something new. They choose to discriminate against those who are ahead of them in the success curve.

Laziness

Some people are afraid of too much work. They want to do what they know and get done with it. These are people who tick the boxes without putting effort into reading the content they are highlighting. They evaluate something and act as they know, but they are too lazy to get facts.

When you present them with a new idea, say a new hairstyle, they want to do it their way, which is wrong most of the time—for instance, curly hair. Most girls are told that the hair has to be straightened. But in the real sense, the stylists are too lazy to know what needs to be done.

Fear of Change

Discrimination is driven by fear of change. When someone contradicts the norm, he or she is forced to conform to the current standards. If not so, the colleagues ignore them. In many cases, ignorance backfires, leading to losses.

For instance, film directors consider girls having different hairstyles as bad fashion. Stylists insist on straightening the hair. In film production, the professionals do not want to change their perception of women. They want to stick with stereotyping. For example, female actors are given fashion roles or sexual appeal that men will notice.

Associating With Like-Minded People

The film industry measures the beauty of a woman with what they can see. Directors overlook females who do not meet the high standard of attractive physical appearance, regardless of their underlying talents. The film producers are afraid that some individuals with open minds might notice this weakness.

However, they overlook people who are intelligent and pick individuals who think like them. They create their circle where they feel secure, a group of people who are lazy and self-centered. They justify their decision by sharing the same opinion. Their greed holds them back, and they forget to grow their revenue streams. They work hard to keep what they have.

Short Minded

The bigshots in filmmaking already have a profitable business; they are not keen to change working for them. They are in a good place, and they feel successful. If something threatens their success, they will ignore it and let it die a natural death.

Writing about the female gender brings in new ideas. They ignore this opportunity even though they know they can make more profit.

woman, girl, crouching

Stereotyping the Female Gender

Some of the film experts believe that ladies are to be seen and not heard. This perception explains why female writers are very few. Even though some men try to write about ladies, the story does not show as strongly as when a female scriptwriter tells it.

Beauty defines girls acceptance

Male directors have limited knowledge of female actors; thus, they only assign them roles that are traditionally associated with the female gender, such as cooking, nursing, and childcare.

There are tons of reasons why some business people discriminate even though it does not increase their profit. They believe in what they are doing. Even though it is wrong, they are too engrossed in self-interests to consider others. They are afraid of change, too lazy to learn, and their choices are based on their ego.

Anything different repels them. Girls have a long way to go if they will overcome gender and stereotyping unfairness. They have to keep doing what they can even when the odds are stacked against them. Discrimination takes time to conquer, and the filmmakers have deeply infiltrated the entertainment industry with misperceptions regarding female ideologies.

SEXUAL HARASSMENT FOR FEMALE PLAYERS IN STARCRAFT2

Sexual harassment has been on the rise for a long time now, and in most harassment cases, the victims are women. Primarily, sexual harassment is unwelcome sexual behavior towards someone, which is intimidating and offensive. Such conduct is punishable by law because it has adverse effects on the victim mentally, socially, and psychologically.  Moreover, harassment is in many forms. People must understand the various types of sexual harassment for them to seek help whenever they feel like they are getting harassed. For instance, these harassments could be in the form of touch, sexual comments, sexual favors, sexual insults, or any other sexual indecency.

Sadly enough, harassment is also rampant on social media platforms where people get sexual comments whenever they ask questions. Women are the most affected group in getting harsh responses that are sexually-oriented in these platforms. Generally, in a starcraft2 forum, female players usually get this type of comment often, which intimidates them. It also makes it difficult for them to associate with other players on the platform.

A women on the starcraft2

For starters, a woman on the starcraft2 forum posted a question to ask if there are female players on the platform that would like to participate in a game without men. In response, a male gamer said to her that she should first post her picture on the platform before she asks questions. The woman then responded to the man and said she does not wish to post her photo, but she can post a picture of her favorite dog. Sadly, after she posted her dog’s picture, harassment comments started flowing from different people in the forum.
About four pages contain sexual comments based on that photo that the woman posted on the forum. Funny enough, all the words came from men, and at some point, they even started insulting the lady for no apparent reason. The guys continued to troll the lady until a moderator of the platform finally spoke out, and he told them that they should stop or get banned from the starcraft2 forum. Despite the moderator’s efforts in protecting the woman, non of the guys who were sexually trolling her pulled down their comments. Some guys who were trolling the woman told the moderator that they were offended by the woman because she was requesting to create a woman-only clan, and they found her sentiments discriminative. Ironically, there were many male-only clans at the time.

desperate, sad, depressed

Harassment on the conversation

The forum’s administrator then joined the argument, and he told the guys to stop. Ideally, the administrator said that the women are also free to create their clans, just like the men. Moreover, the administrator said that if women make their clans, they can play together with men and compete. Someone joined the conversation, and they said that when the girls lose to the guys, they should say” rape.” This statement is very offensive, especially to women, and they did not hesitate to talk about how offended they were with those sentiments. Nevertheless, the guy who commented on how the women should respond when they lose to the guys did not pull down his comments.

While women are supposed to stand for each other when such sentiments get made about their gender, a woman started commenting and attacking the woman who was the subject matter of the whole thread. She comes on and starts defending the guys who were sexually harassing the lady by saying that there are sexists all over the world. Additionally, she said that the lady should have known that before posting a picture according to the guys’ demands. She said that the lady in question was ignorant of this fact, and she deserved all the harassment comments she was getting. Ideally, she asked why someone would post a picture if they do not expect people to start commenting.

As the threads continued, it became clear that the starcraft2 forum is full of misogynists as every guy who joined the thread was against the woman. They came on and threw harsh words at her, and some of them continued to harass her and make fun of the whole thread sexually. Some people were even saying that they were not even sure if she was a woman, or just a man posing as a woman. Some people said they were unsure if her intentions about creating the women-only clan were genuine, or she was seeking attention from the group members, calling her an attention-seeking whore. In truth, the group’s sentiments about the woman were all sexually-oriented, and they were very disheartening.

woman, face, bullying

One should stand against harassment and raise voice

The sexual harassments on the platform are so severe towards women, making it necessary for most women not to disclose they are female to avoid getting harassed. Ideally, it becomes the women’s responsibility to stand for themselves on the platform. They should not depend on the forum’s administrators to shut down the harassment comments on the platform. Essentially, women should always look out for themselves on the starcraft2 forum because of the platform’s misogynists.

In truth, many online platforms get associated with harassment, especially against women. Many people don’t know each other on many of these platforms, giving the harassers the confidence to do what they do. If you do not see the person harassing you on these platforms, it becomes almost impossible for you to follow it up, and it becomes difficult for you to take legal measures against them. However, for some women, the online harasser is someone they know, and he threatens them about posting their explicit photos. As such, they intimidate their victim, and in some cases, they end up extorting them.

Fortunately, harassment is a crime, and it has many legal repercussions. However, many people are not aware of the standard measures they should take when faced with harassment on social media. While sexual harassment on social platforms may not be physical, they still have many adverse effects. For instance, the woman trolled on starcraft 2 suffered a lot of emotional damage when the guys were trolling and insulting her sexually. Sometimes, if the emotional damage is not controlled, it leads to severe mental disorders like depression, for instance. It makes someone shy to participate on social platforms because of the fear of being trolled or being sexually harassed.

Better Environment

Indeed, members of society should come together to stop harassment, especially on social platforms. The harassments that women experience on social media like starcraft 2 are unfortunate. The administrators on such platforms should take strict measures to ensure that members don’t engage in such activities. As such, they should impose strict regulations against such misconduct in their forums like burning any person who sexually assaults other people, for starters. Normalizing this behavior makes it prevalent on these platforms, which makes it revolting because of the adverse effects it brings to the victim. In this modern society, we should learn to use social media to share experiences and knowledge. People should learn how to be conscious of other people’s feelings, and what their actions on the internet could do to other people. Social forums get created for people to share and comment positively on other people’s questions and concerns.
Furthermore, it would also be helpful if more strict laws were incorporated to punish online sexual offenders, making online platforms better. Generally, the casual harassment comments that people throw at each other on social media are sickening. The internet would be much better without such people who find joy in trolling people on social media platforms.

THE BECHDEL TEST ITS NOT ABOUT PASSING

In recent years, there has been more attention on the representation of women in the media. As the concept of feminism has become common, more people have become conscious of women’s portrayal in films and movies. There have been campaigns to have women take more lead roles. Critics of movies have developed yardsticks to measure films’ conformity to what they consider as an ideal presentation of women. One such measure of a movie’s characterization of women is the Bechdel Test.

While the Bechdel test looks at female characters’ development in films and movies, many still do not understand its works and purpose. Many still believe that passing it is a prerequisite for a good representation of women. However, that is quite far from the truth. There are three things to consider for a film to pass the test.

• First, the film must have at least two female characters
• The two female characters must have names and must speak to each other
• They must converse with each other about something not related to a male character or male love interest

The origins of the test are a comic where one character refuses to go to a movie unless it contains scenes with two female characters engaging in a conversation without the mention of men or anything to do with men. The objective here is to have movies that focus on gender equality. The Assumption is that as more scenes involve women conversing about things not related to men, a movie achieves gender equality. It has become a yardstick to measure diversity in content. The original goal was to identify strong female characters. However, it can be applied to any category to determine the level of diversity in the story.

The Bechdel Test’s misconceptions come from a misunderstanding of what feminism calls for in films and movies. While there is a clamor for more robust and more prominent female characters in cinema, eliminating men from the scenes does not serve the cause. Indeed, scenes with female characters having conversations devoid of the mention of men are rare. However, that does not mean that the characters are necessarily weak. Even dominant male characters discuss women in their conversations while still retaining their lead roles. Therefore, removing men entirely from conversations between female characters would not improve the position of female characters. It may weaken the plot of the movie.

The test’s purpose lies in determining why the scenes involving women characters discussing things other than men are rare in movies. Digging deep into the issue reveals that most TV shows, films, and movies lack well-developed and relevant female characters. There are rare instances where a female character is strong enough to advance the storyline. Reversely, there are many instances where male characters can discuss issues without mentioning women or anything related to women. Most movies, films, and TV shows involve multiple well-developed male characters that can advance the story. Thus, although the test aims to show women’s representation in the media, passing it does not mean that the movie or film achieves gender balance. It can pass the test yet be sexist. Further, forcing a movie to conform to the test’s requirements may take away from the plot, making it dull.

Traditionally, male characters play dominant roles as female characters take peripheral roles. That explains why women often mention male names in their conversations. To the writers, they can only enhance female characters’ contribution to the plot by talking about men. The problem of weak character development for women characters is what the test seeks to highlight. It aims to show how writers have a bias against female characters in the development of their stories. Therefore, trying to force a scene so that two female characters can discuss a topic such as the weather while male characters are doing something worthwhile makes the scene awkward. It would further draw attention to the sidelining of the female characters in the story. It reveals the sexism that continues to persist despite the best efforts to avoid or deny it. For some people, sexism is unconscious, while for others, it is more predetermined.

People may think that audiences do not want to hear what female characters say. However, that is more of a fallacy. The audience responds to developed characters. Thus, if you have an irrelevant, poorly-developed feeling out of sync with the plot, the audience would fail to connect with that character. It does not matter whether the name is male or female. If movies were to present male characters to be irrelevant to the plot, the audience would conclude that male characters had nothing relevant. They would become movie props whose purpose was to advance the movie’s aesthetics rather than add to the plot.

Some movies would fail the reverse Bechtel Test. In such movies, the men take the peripheral role and do not advance the story’s plot without mentioning the female characters. On the other hand, the female characters are more dominant, performing heroic acts. The movies prove that the goal is not to pass the test but to develop female characters to remain relevant to the plot. An obsession with passing the test may, in most instances, kill the story before it even develops beyond the first act.

Although people may insist on Bechdel’s stories, the scenes offer little information about the story’s sexism. They only give women scenes where they interact without talking about men, never mind the relevance of the conversations to the story’s plot. A report may pass the test yet have a sexist property while another fails the test but involves well-developed dominant female characters. You may have a scene where two peripheral female characters discuss irrelevant things, such as shoes, without mentioning men. Such a scene would make a film pass the test, yet the female characters play to the plot’s sexist narrative for the rest of the film.

On the other hand, another film may fail to have any scene where female characters talk about things not related to men, yet have interesting, strong female characters. While such a film may fail the test, it overcomes the sexist biases that dominate the industry. It allows women to have leading roles meaningful and relevant to the plot despite the women discussing men in their conversations. A good measure of sexism in any story is the availability or absence of opportunities for women participation. Therefore, a piece of information with limited opportunities for women would be sexist even if it may pass the test.

Feminists do not always have to avoid talking about men. A feminist can still fancy a man without giving up her ideologies. Having relationships with men does not negate the feminist ideologies. Equality is achievable even while pursuing romantic relationships as part of life, which should also be part of stories. To eliminate such relationships just to fit into a given desired ideal situation would be to kill creativity. What is needed is a balance in the female characters that allows them to have more dominant plot development roles.

AZIS ANSARI ART PUSHING PEOPLE

The story of Azis Ansari and a questionable sexual encounter that occurred in the past was one of the #MeToo movement’s biggest stories. No one expected Ansari to be the subject of one of these stories, but this tale was featured on Babe.net, where an anonymous woman relayed the experience that she had with the comedian. No matter which side you have taken after the story came out, you cannot miss the creative works that it has inspired. Continue reading to learn more about how this encounter has changed the art world and Ansari’s craft.

Pushing People Is A Delicate Business

The anonymous woman called Grace for the Babe.net article about an alleged sexual assault involving Azis Ansari said she felt pushed. Because pushing people is often apparent, it was even more surprising when Ansari admitted to the encounter but felt surprised that that is how she remembered it. He said that he was concerned, but it was too late.

Ansari was already one of the poster boys for the #MeToo movement, even though there was only one accusation that seemed nebulous at best. Even so, it gave the art world a chance to talk more about the #MeToo movement while also reminding men that sexual assault is not always so apparent.

How Does Creativity Speak To The Movement?

When the #MeToo movement started, it was an online rendering of encounters that women finally felt free to share. Simultaneously, it allowed artists, comedians, writers, singers, songwriters, and filmmakers to talk more about how women are treated. This meant that cartoons were featuring a version of Ansari that you can still find online today.

Because this work is still around, it chronicles what might have happened between Ansari and the aforementioned Grace in simple terms. It is the right way for women to learn about what might happen to them. At the same time, Ansari has the opportunity to talk about what the encounter has meant to him as he moves forward with his career.

Ansari Was The Ally

Ansari was the funny ally who was also a man of color, and that is why these accusations felt even worse to the general public. No one wanted to believe that he could be guilty of such a thing, and it made women feel as though they could not trust men at all.

Ansari has a funny persona that he crafted by appearing in stand-up specials and on the hit NBC series “Parks & Rec.” He worked hard to be in a place where he could even speak to women’s experiences in the past.

One of his most famous jokes talks about how men always have crazy girlfriend stories. He then notes that women never have crazy boyfriend stories because the crazy boyfriend usually kills them. While this is funny on its face, it is also bitingly true. To hear that Ansari might be guilty of sexual assault makes the joke terrifying because it is almost as if he knows from personal experience.

Of course, no one if accusing Ansari of such a thing, but women who have been scarred by men in the past have a right to read into things that Ansari has said as part of his comedy specials.

How Is Ansari Recovering?

Ansari’s life was changed when these accusations came out in 2017. He took some time away from the spotlight, and he returned to the spotlight with a new comedy special in 2019. He even starts the special by talking about what happened. He has said that he feels terrible that Grace felt the way she did. That is not what he wanted for her, and he wishes he could go back and change it.

As he continues to tell jokes, he needs to bring the audience back to the world of comedy, but his comedy must always be tinged with a bit of contrition so that the American public knows that he is sorry. He is not letting this event ruin his career, but he is much more mindful of how he can be an ally to women while also helping men understand how they relate to women.

Has Ansari Felt Free To Create A New Persona?

Ansari has created a new persona for himself so that he can be a unique entertainer. This does not mean he completely changed his persona from the likable guy to someone who is copying George Carlin or Lenny Bruce. He can add a bit of grit to his work. By doing so, Ansari is showing that honesty is often the best type of comedy. He has even said that the old version of himself that is famous for encouraging us all to “Treat Yoself” has died off.

He does not want his old persona to feel fake. He knows that he cannot merely be the happy-go-lucky person that he was in the past. He wants to show that his creativity and his craft can change because of what he has learned. He can be a new comedian and be much more artistic in the process.

While he is not cashing in on what happened, he is trying to be a new entertainer. He might even start a new TV show where he can be this new person who completely understands that life is not always happy and jolly.

Aziz Ansari Wants To Move Forward

Ansari wants to move forward while also admitting that he could very well have been wrong on that night he was out with Grace. He is going to move forward, just like the world of art. He wants to make sure that he can shine a light on society without masking it without sugarcoating how the world treats both men and women. He has killed the old version of himself, but he has also shown that there is a way for anyone to rebound from a situation they wish they could back and fix.
