Demographics aren’t just for TV. Apparently it’s important for colleges to admit just the right number of white boys, white girls, and boys and girls of other races. Like the TV/film industry, admissions officers cite invisible stats about how enrollments go down when you get too many girls attending, which is a real problem when you consider that all but the most pathetic schools in America are turning away record numbers of applicants every year. I mean, if fewer kids applied, they’d have less paper to shred at the end, and who wants that?
Of course, the “most qualified applicant” argument cuts the other way, because I seriously doubt educational opportunities have really caught up for people who aren’t white men. I had a very good public schooling, which led to my admission to a prestigious university, and I don’t feel my being female held me back. But I watched Jewish kids wrestle with teachers who tried to force them to come in on Saturdays for missing tests when they were absent on Jewish weekday holidays. I remember comparing graded tests with an African American girl, and discovering that we had put all the same answers but gotten different scores. This happened week after week until her mother talked to the principle about talking to the ACLU.
On the other hand, maybe we are caught up enough to consider a totally blind application process, in which admissions officers have no idea what race or gender an application represents. Even the name should be removed to avoid potential clues. It’s worth considering. I know people who aren’t white and male may have to work harder, but there doesn’t seem to be any way around that in any case. At least this way, we might get rewarded by getting admitted to the schools of our choice.
Because from the lawsuits we’ve had over the past few years, white males must not be kicking ass like they did back when they had no competition.
